A journey to the Middle Ages through three castles.
Discipline, bravery, capacity for suffering and loyalty were the principles of the Templar Knights. Their history has always been shrouded in mystery and darkness, which has forged all kinds of legends about their life, but in reality, these noble Christian warriors were intended to protect pilgrims crossing Europe with the intention of visiting the Holy Land. The Order of the Temple was founded in 1119, and would become the most powerful religious order during the Middle Ages.
They arrived in the Peninsula at the time of the Reconquest and actively participated in the fight against the Muslims. For nearly 70 years they defended Castellon, a strategic point for the armed defense of Christianity, and as payment for their valor they received innumerable territories and properties that made them very powerful.
The “Templar Mirador” is an interpretive trail that, in its more than 26 kilometers long, runs through the Natural Park of Serra d’Irta between the castles of Peñiscola, Santa Magdalena de Pulpis and Alcala de Xivert and combines the rich landscape with the historical appeal of the fortresses that belonged to the Order of the Temple. This itinerary winds through the mountains where the castles were strategically installed in search of control of the territory from the heights. Today they are spectacular balconies for hikers, tourists and history lovers. The curious hiker will find landscapes full of life and will walk with the Mediterranean Sea as an adventure companion.
The Sistine Chapel of Maestrazgo
There are beautiful places worth visiting in the interior of the Valencian Community. The hermitage of the Mare de Déu de L’Avellà is a jewel that will leave you speechless.
This hermitage is located in the natural setting of the Serra de l’Avellà, in the municipality of Catí, almost 1000 m above sea level. Its interior is decorated with frescoes in almost the entire enclosure made by Pascual Mespletera (1737), which were restored in 2018.
Plan this full-day excursion where, in addition to its cultural interest you can complete the visit enjoying the beneficial waters of the Spa of L’Avellà and taste a signature menu in its restaurant, with typical products of the Maestrazgo (jerky, sheep cheese, mushrooms, roast lamb and kid, almonds and pine nuts, artichokes, …). Among its proposals, the Truffle Menu stands out, since Castellón is one of the main producers of black truffle in Spain, due to the environmental conditions of the interior of the province, ideal for the production of the appreciated fungus.
In the Bajo Maestrazgo region we find hundreds of ancient olive trees, majestic witnesses of our history, which have lived with us since the ancient civilizations that populated the Iberian Peninsula to the present day.
On our arrival in Traiguera we will be able to contemplate, among many others, the award-winning monumental olive tree of Spain, with an exceptional trunk of 10.2 meters in perimeter and a unique stamp that seems to defy eternity. Next, we will visit the olive oil winery, where we will learn about its history and the work they do, and we will taste a tasting of this wonderful liquid gold accompanied by typical sausages of the area. Then, we will go to Cervera del Maestre, where we will learn about the tools and utensils that are part of the daily life of the farmer in his work of cultivation, pruning and harvesting of olive trees, as well as for the extraction of oil and its packaging.
Later we will approach the Royal Sanctuary of the Font de la Salud, a vestige of the passage of the orders of Montesa and the Hospital, declared of Cultural Interest in 2007. It has its origins in the fourteenth century, being its maximum splendor in the sixteenth century. It is the only one with the Royal category in the province of Castellón, granted by Charles V in 1542, renewed by Philip II and confirmed by Papal Bull in 1555.
